My Kode with Klossy Experience

My Kode with Klossy Experience

By Ume Habiba

So as a normal teenager, I was surfing the web and trying to figure out what to do to try to be productive. I was always a huge fan of Karlie Kloss because of my passion of learning about the fashion industry. I came across a link that led me to a scholarship program hosted by none other than Karlie Kloss. I’d heard of it before, but I wasn’t sure if there was a camp near me or if it even cost money. I had a huge passion for coding so I started to look deeper into it and went on a research hunt (as I would normally when I want to learn more about something), and I found out there was a camp coming to Baltimore for the first time this summer!

My next step was to apply, and since it didn’t cost anything, I thought it wouldn’t hurt to at least try. Thinking that only about 1000 girls around the country got this amazing opportunity, it made me push to make my application bigger and better. I applied online in April, and didn’t expect to hear anything back. On May 26th, as I was wrapping up AP testing month and getting ready for finals, I checked my email and got an email that made all of my stresses go away for a second. I had been accepted! I wondered what they thought of my video (as part of the submission) and so many questions running through my head. I was just very excited to continue my coding journey!

During the camp, we did a course through Learn.co and submitted them on Github! We also did activities that allowed us to bond over our passions and also learn more about each other! Some projects we did included a shopping cart, and a bank account. We also had very special guest speakers during the last week of camp which was so inspiring. One in particular was a lady from Senegal, and she gave a speech that really opened my eyes about problems occurring in other countries that are not developed. The second to last day we talked to the one and only Karlie Kloss over Facetime and it was such an amazing time!

The camp started on June 18th and ran through June 29th, and in those 2 weeks I met the most amazing group of people that not only inspired me, but motivated me to continue into my career field. There were girls who were attending public universities to Ivy Leagues, and from biologists to future computer engineers. The amount of perseverance that flowed through the room those 2 weeks I was there was unimaginable. I was told to T.A next year so I could go around the country and help girls at other camps code and have fun!

Maryland Teachers Travel to Philadelphia for Code.org TeacherCon

Teachers from around the state came together in Philadelphia this week at TeacherCon, a computer science curriculum training conference hosted by Code.org. Counties represented included Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Cecil, Charles, Frederick, Montgomery, Prince George's, and St. Mary's. Teachers will be bringing back a new Code.org introductory computer science curriculum, CS Discoveries, for students in grades 6th-9th. High school teachers in attendance will be bringing back Code.org's CS Principles, a new advanced placement computer science course that was first introduced last year.
